Between Light and Shadow

Online Exhibition

An exploration of the delicate interplay between illumination and obscurity. In this exhibition, we invite you on a journey through the realms of light and shadow, where boundaries blur, and perception shifts.

Light and shadow are more than mere opposites; they are dynamic forces that shape our understanding of the world around us. Light illuminates, reveals, and brings clarity to the forefront, while shadow cloaks, conceals, and hints at mysteries yet to be uncovered. Together, they dance in a timeless duet, creating layers of depth, contrast, and intrigue within our visual landscape.

Artist Statement:
Delicate nuance of value and texture become tools in conveying powerful dramatic statements about earthly beings who are not afraid to wonder, think, dream, and take that one step beyond.

The inhabitants of the etherial atmosphere appear at odds with their surroundings. This is the result when the merely earthly confronts its unavoidable connection to the awe, mystery, and majesty of the heavens. However, when fragile earthly beauty confronts sublime heavenly beauty, the earthly is reverently and silently humbled.

Even as young as six years old, I was greatly influenced by the different characteristics of light. From the soft, muted palette of winter oranges and browns to the crisp, eye-squinting fierceness of a spring morning after a night of rain. In my works, I continuously delve into the interplay of light on surfaces and backgrounds, shadows and silhouettes.

Artist Statement:
My interest in still life grew from my curiosity about the significance of objects we find fill our domestic landscapes. Our surroundings are filled with items that range from mundane to meaningful, things we purposed, and others imposed of necessity.

A unique iconography continues to evolve in my work from these simple subjects. I believe they imprint our psyche more than we realize. Though each of my still-life’s contain a personal narrative, I believe this imagery can evoke universal responses to time, place and experience for others. Shadows have increasingly greater import in my compositions, as I enjoy portraying the effects of their duplicitous nature.

Shadows simultaneously reveal, mimic, shelter, loom, or deceive expanding opportunities for metaphor in my work.

I have always been drawn to visual elements in our environment which evoke strong visceral reactions, especially those of appreciation and recognition of beauty. However, it is always a challenge to capture at least a small essence of these in a photographic exposure and subsequent print. Meeting this challenge is a continual learning process, and for me has never been easy, as one would expect, and requires time spent to familiarize oneself with an area and often multiple visits over time. Thankfully, this experience creates a wonderful journey and much enjoyment, as well as eventual artistic output to share.

My art draws from my personal experiences, influenced by nature, my yoga practice, and the diverse cultures I've encountered. Through abstract paintings and paper sculptures, I aim to explore the balance between freedom and stability, wilderness and comfort. I express emotions and sensations in my work through intentional color choices and rhythmic patterns, creating a slow and transformative process. I hope that when viewers engage with my art, they'll take a moment to reflect on the dual nature within us all—our desire to explore and our need for stability.

Art is to me, it is a same as my life, I cannot breathe without it. I decided to be an artist without any question. I studied 4 years at the Tokyo University of Art. They taught me many different of art, but one thing they did not teach me how art and I are connecting to each other. Creative mind is the source of art, and speaking inside of me all the time, how about this, it always gives me the idea of what to do, so I create the ideas from my creative mind, so those are the same source comes from it is me. I create art because it is from inside of me and comes from outside also as energy forms. I call those art.

Words are the subject matter of nearly all my work. I call my most recent series "Layers." Each painting shows one short word spelled with geometrcally shaped letterforms, each of which reaches the edges of the canvas. The letters necessarily overlap so they are painted to appear sufficiently transparent for the viewer to access each letter and thus, read the word.

In the case of "LUX" the letters are also sufficiently opaque to block out the "backlighting." The full name of this painting is "LUX (et umber incendit)" which is Latin for "Light and burnt umber." (The Latin for shadow is "umbra" from which "umber" is derived.)

Artist Statement:
Much of life moves on the expectations of outcome. Art encourages me to let go of outcome and trust the process. When I relinquish control, the more creative energy manifests itself and arouses my authentic vision.

Inspiration comes from the diverse beauty of the surrounding universe. I am fascinated by the symmetry, chaos, brilliance and the diffuse nature presented for each of our senses. One great canvas urges me to emulate its wonder with my voice. The beauty occurs to me. We all see it but sometimes unaware of the specificity of each miracle. My ambition is to capture an idea seen but previously undiscovered. Then decide what is the actual reality and what is the illusion.

Since the beginning of what we know as time, our existence has been in a constant state of flux constantly moving, constantly reforming, constantly transforming our beings and our perception of reality. I seek to document the messages along my journey and my art embodies infinite movement.

Rather than a signature style, what characterizes my work is the unexpected in terms of medium, subject matter, thinking process and style. I enjoy each piece being somewhat disruptive and different from anything that has come before it. This ambiguous approach, sometimes delineated and other times blurred, reminds me of how each dream I have is always in an entirely new location, and I enjoy this element of surprise in my artwork. I draw from nature, the man made world of architecture, still life, the human figure, and the inner musings of my mind. Although I mainly paint abstractly on canvas and wood panel in oil, I also use acrylic, charcoal, wax pastel, watercolor, hand-painted collaged paper, and found objects. For the most part, the process of creating is more important to me than the end result.

Having been working on various materials, I have chosen stainless steel as my current main material. Besides this main material, I also use clay slip collected in Kasama, one of the major Japanese pottery production areas. With these materials, I create my artwork inspired by the sea.

I’m thrilled and excited when I encounter a stainless steels look that is reminiscent of sparkle of the sea and waves, its transparency, and its sense of inclusiveness. Perhaps this is because I was raised in a small fishing town beside the sea, and it was always my playground. Stainless steel has the potential to turn into the sea.

During my production, I feel that this material begins to talk to me, such as “Inflate more, here.", "Make a little dent, here.", "Next is over there. Hurry up!". My artworks are created honestly following their voices.

Artist Statement:
The surrounding world calls to the heart of each of us to notice, to drop our perceptual filters and truly see, to pause and participate in the being-becoming that surrounds us. The photographer's eye must overcome its habituation to the world surrounding us so that what one attends to what is really present. If one is willing to pause and truly see with gaze unfiltered by preconceptions, one finds a profound connection to the world. It is the job of the photographer to capture the visual clues that evoke a sense of home, of connection, of an awareness of our larger selves in such a way that the viewer of the work may feel a resonant connection.

Noticing the play of light across a surface is the key to finding this world-resonance. This beneficence of light upon the gaze of the photographer can become a kind of benediction upon the head and the heart of the viewer. She may have an experience that is akin to remembering something she has never seen or some place she has never been.

Artist Statement:
I work with the controlled oxidation of iron, copper, and bronze metal effects paints which creates patina, a thin layer of oxidation that forms on the surface through age and exposure. The process yields natural yet dramatic effects that convey the passage of time.

When I was in my early 20s, I had the opportunity to view the Mark Rothko retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. I was enthralled, found myself lost in spiritual reverie and experienced a sense of the sublime too great to be expressed in words. I seek to capture some of that sense of awe that Rothko's work evokes and create paintings that transcend the familiar and the merely decorative.

In traditional Japanese art, wabi-sabi is an aesthetic view centered on the acceptance of imperfection. It is a composite of Wabi (austere beauty) and sabi (rustic patina ). My paintings and sculptures evoke a sense of serene melancholy and spiritual longing, the very essence of wabi-sabi.
