Artist Statement:
As I am allergic to discourses about what makes me a unique and talented artist – I will keep this relatively short and simple.

I started using a camera seriously about 20 years ago. My goal was to use photography as a learning tool to discover and document how plants grow. [A useful skill for a newly graduated landscape architect] Along the way, this educational tool became a fascination with plants and photography. I have expanded my photographic interests over the years but my first love is still closeup botanical photography. My next love would be design. As a landscape architect, I have been schooled in design, art, and science related to natural and built landscapes. For me, photography is at its best when it successfully blends all of these into a successful image.

Jen Carmiel is a Florida-born, South Carolina based figure painter. She graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of South Florida in December of 2020. Throughout her study of the human figure, Carmiel developed a deep love for depicting the feminine experience. Her work incorporates abstract, expressive mark making and observed figure drawing. Her paintings depict feminine figures that are dreamlike, and unapologetic in their zest for life. One may say, enjoying life is as easy as breathing.

I am a visual artist working in the expanded field of painting and am interested in art’s ability to communicate complex narratives about our society through contemporary signs and symbols. The images I produce operate between figuration and abstraction while examining our evolving understanding of the physical world, the nature of progress, technology, and the anthropogenic impacts at the center of climate change. My methods of investigation are not limited to traditional mediums and regularly examine new technologies, integrating them into my artistic practice.

Artist Statement:
Heather Freeman’s paintings are visual adventures, inspired by life’s joy, despite its challenges. Each artwork is an experiment of play with color, organic shapes, and more identifiable doodles layered into a dynamic visual journey that explores the complexity of our lives and how we choose to show up in the world. Her recent work relies on the symbolic, whimsical, and abstract. Heather explains, “I find inspiration in the every day. From the people who defy the challenges they face, to the beauty of the outdoors, to the joy of simple moments experienced - these all become a part of my work.” The actual process of playing with layers, color, and shapes also inspires the final story of the work. The thoughtful pushing back and pulling forward are intentionally presented in all of Freeman’s paintings. The paradox of life, hints of courage, hardship, and intuition all present themselves within the adventure that unfolds and reveals itself through Freeman’s art.

Artist Statement:
Painting is essential in my life. For me each piece is autobiographical, capturing my internal life. I see the world around me in paint colors. My palette reflects the seasons. Nature is my inspiration, I am fascinated by the ever-evolving shapes and variety I find there.

Landscapes are metaphors for my emotions and spirit. The sand, ocean and surrounding areas contain changing worlds while trees strike me as guardians of nature in their stature and complexity. Great open spaces and skies inspire me.The longer I study them the more abstract they become, yet still solid and concrete.

My process always begins with observation. I try to take a"photo" with my mind- a mental sketch. I have often wished my eyes were cameras. I concentrate on one section- similar to cropping an image, This helps with the composition of the piece. Then my imagination and experience of the subject take over. Still, I never know where a piece will take me.

Artist Statement:
Gardening, weaving, and photography are my trifecta of passions; however, my gardens are the heart of my art. They are where my process begins: offering image inspiration, a quiet place to solve problems, and a space for renewal.

I developed the term Fiberography to explain my art, as it uses both photography and weaving. Photographing in my gardens, I'm interested in the details of plants. I focus on their color patterns, shapes, and textures using a macro attachment on my iphone. By enlarging and abstracting the images, I am able to bring into focus the most interesting parts of the plant. I use very thin multicolored sewing threads as my weaving's warp to enhance, but not to distract from the image.

What I hope viewers will take away from my art, is the same sense of meditative peace that I enjoy while working in my gardens. I want viewers to take time to really look and see the fine details, beauty and magic in nature that they often miss in this busy world.

Art is to me, it is a same as my life, I cannot breathe without it. I decided to be an artist without any question. I study 4 years at the Tokyo University of Art. They taught me many different forms of art, but one thing they did not teach me is how art and I are connected to each other. Creative mind is the source of art, and speaking inside of me all the time, how about this, it always gives me the idea of what to do, so I create but idea from my creative mind, so those are the same source comes from it is me. I create art because it is from inside of me and comes from outside also as energy forms. I call those art.

Artist Statement:
I encounter the world through photography, striving to see and know the forms and spirit of things. I explore the glory & pathos, the heroism & hubris of humanity and our struggle to find and create meaning. One influence is Georgia O'Keeffe, who could draw a banana plant or paint a landscape pregnant with the human condition. Another is Margaret Bourke-White, who saw beauty in industry. Framing is a foundational aesthetic and tool of the photographer. Imposing frames on reality profoundly disrupts reality, isolating, freezing, re-presenting a fragment of time and space, which humans by and large experience as continuous. Whatever my subject-nature, industry, architecture-I use abstraction, framing and techniques like selective focus, color, and monochrome to transform telling details and fleeting insights into an invitation to viewers to see and know as well.

As an abstract artist, my creative process revolves around capturing fleeting moments' essence. My art conveys a perspective merging memory with personal interpretation, inviting viewers to engage and shape their experience. Human perception, influenced by memories and viewpoints, evolves steadily. Deliberate color selection initiates a conversation between viewers and artworks, offering a chance for reflection on perceptions. Skillful blending aims to depict each moment's essence, encouraging contemplation and appreciation for the ephemeral beauty within transient moments.

When the world shuttered in March of 2020, I saw my life — my normalcy — stripped and reduced to a one-bedroom box I called home. Panic-stricken, I turned to a constant in my life: painting. Like millions of others worldwide, revisiting a hobby I sparsely carried out throughout my life revitalized me during the loneliness of quarantine. With no one around, my plants became my muses and shortly thereafter bloomed my “Pandemic Series.” This series is my attempt to self-soothe alone; grieving what my life used to be. Although, arguably, the pandemic is all but done in the public eye, its legacy has taken a toll in innumerable ways. The sense of control a canvas provided shielded me from the wavering chaos outside of my front door. In art, I manifested a brighter future through color and foliage. After all, to find nature is to find peace.

Her artwork is created from the spirit within and from a well of emotions as a form of exploration and catharsis of the psyche. Her stories are ones that express the strangeness of the human experience. Crafted from a collection of hopeful discoveries of the self and alternate realities of the self. She plants her seeds in her sketchbooks where she cultivates her novel ideas and is a place that is safe and free in her wild expression. A place of refuge amongst pages and pages of messy anecdotes, expanding the boundaries of character design and world-building.

Artist Statement:
Denise Richards took a roundabout approach to creating the type of art she does now. From the time she was quite small, she always created something, ranging from designing clothing/jewelry for her own businesses many years ago to studying graphic design and documentary film when computers became popular back in the 90s. After teaching book layout, graphic design, web/app design for many years, she found herself on digital overload. Eventually, she began to explore small fine art pieces and began taking classes in collage, watercolor, acrylics, and using plaster and other compounds in fine art.

Inspired by Robert Rauschenberg's and Kurt Schwitters' work, she became interested in collage and was lucky enough to be accepted into several shows very quickly. In 2018, she moved to Mexico for a couple of years and continued her classes in San Miguel de Allende and Patzcuaro, Michoacán where she was living, both areas rich sources of inspiration for artists of all types.

My art reflects my emotional connection to the Magic and Mystery of nature that surrounds me.

But what is Magic? For me, Magic is the sound of wind, the smell of weather, the dappling of light, the dance of leaves, even rust on a barrel; nothing conventional, usually imaginary, sensitive, sensual, thought-provoking.

To begin with, I work intuitively; playing with combinations of colors and textures until the painting nudges me, and reminds me of a feeling, a place, a poem.

Artist Statement:
The surrounding world calls to the heart of each of us to notice, to drop our perceptual filters and truly see, to pause and participate in the being-becoming that surrounds us. The photographer's eye must overcome its habituation to the world surrounding us so that what one attends to what is really present. If one is willing to pause and truly see with gaze unfiltered by preconceptions, one finds a profound connection to the world. It is the job of the photographer to capture the visual clues that evoke a sense of home, of connection, of an awareness of our larger selves in such a way that the viewer of the work may feel a resonant connection.

Noticing the play of light across a surface is the key to finding this world-resonance. This beneficence of light upon the gaze of the photographer can become a kind of benediction upon the head and the heart of the viewer. She may have an experience that is akin to remembering something she has never seen or some place she has never been.

Life is a work in progress, and my art is my path to clarity. In a world of constant striving for external achievements, it’s easy to lose touch with our inner voice. My creative process provides a steady compass, reminding me to stop and appreciate how wondrous the ordinary can be. My art serves as a testament to the moments of everyday life that often go unnoticed. It is a means for me to honor and document the beauty that can be found in the simplest of experiences. Whether I am capturing the breathtaking beauty of nature or expressing the complex emotions evoked by a mundane interaction, my goal is to create art that reflects the truthfulness of these moments.

Artist Statement:
The allegorical paintings of Roe LiBretto incorporate an innovative watercolor technique ritualizing her acknowledgment that a painting is the physical manifestation of information found in what Carl Jung referred to as the collective unconscious. The grainy texture of each piece is created by painting over a finished watercolor with a topcoat of tempera paint and, after that is dry, washing the painting. This technique imbues her work with an antique quality, reflecting the timeless story each painting portrays.

I believe that just as all things in the human body are connected and assist each other physically and spiritually, so too does everything in the universe. I see my work as expressing spiritual emotions about this inter-connectedness. We all have physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual parts to us, and I try to engage all of these elements while doing a piece of art.

I started as an artist doing representational work of landscapes, still lives and figures that gradually changed to my abstract work, but the influence of nature remains based on my observations of nature. I believe nature’s proportions and compositions are perfect, especially when filtered through the imagination.

Artist Statement:
I work with the controlled oxidation of iron, copper, and bronze metal effects paints which creates patina, a thin layer of oxidation that forms on the surface through age and exposure. The process yields natural yet dramatic effects that convey the passage of time.

When I was in my early 20s, I had the opportunity to view the Mark Rothko retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. I was enthralled, found myself lost in spiritual reverie and experienced a sense of the sublime too great to be expressed in words. I seek to capture some of that sense of awe that Rothko's work evokes and create paintings that transcend the familiar and the merely decorative.

In traditional Japanese art, wabi-sabi is an aesthetic view centered on the acceptance of imperfection. It is a composite of Wabi (austere beauty) and sabi (rustic patina ). My paintings and sculptures evoke a sense of serene melancholy and spiritual longing, the very essence of wabi-sabi.
